Dinner and a show!

February is technically the shortest month of the year, but for many it feels like the longest. If you are looking for a way to shake things up and stir up your soul a little, we would like to invite you to the Millstone King’s Wharf this Saturday to enjoy some beautiful live music!

We are thrilled to welcome the talented Willie Stratton to the stage on February 25th at 8:30pm.  Tickets are $15 before or $20 at the door.  If you’d like to buy them ahead of time you can email Megan@millstonepublichouse.com  or call the restaurant at 902-404-8053 or stop in at King’s Wharf.

“For more than a decade now, Willie Stratton has been building his good name on stellar sonic shape-shifting. The Halifax-based singer-songwriter has proven time and again that he can dive into any of rock ‘n’ roll’s various iterations—heartsick blues, twanged-up country, hip-shaking rockabilly, groovy surf, anything and everything in between—and emerge, again, as a maestro of the style.”  – https://williestratton.com

Call a friend or two, grab a few tickets and come early for a nice dinner before the show.  Live music has a way of connecting us.  You get to truly feel the energy of the artist and the crowd; it’s an unforgettable experience.  If you aren’t already a fan of Willie Stratton, you may well become one!

We will be offering a feature cocktail for the evening.  The Sparkling Raspberry Cosmo!  Light and refreshing..perfect weekend vibes. This delicious concoction will be available at all three locations.

Remember, life opens up when you do. So pull up a barstool and have some  fun.

Open Mic Night at Millstone King’s Wharf

The maritimes are known for kitchen parties, ugly sticks, sing alongs, fiddle jams and gathering around song.  We wanted to offer that incredible vibe to our customers at the Millstone and are currently running an OPEN MIC NIGHT at our oceanside King’s Wharf location.  There is a small stage surrounded by a beautiful bar area and intimate tables with candles and drinks.  Come see what it’s all about Thursday nights from 8 – 11pm

Host and skilled musician Michael Haley will take the stage and engage the crowd in his incredible repertoire of songs from Oasis to Blue Rodeo to the Tragically Hip and more!  He will also open the stage to allow other local musicians to share their talent with the crowd.  It is fun and unique and an opportunity to hear new voices in this great community.  Come show them your support and have a great night doing it.

What would you do with a $100 Bar Tab?

As we round the corner on two years on the waterfront at Millstone King’s Wharf we are constantly told by new customers that they had never been in before….didn’t even know we were there!  Once they settle in to their cozy table they often comment on how great it is to see the water on all three sides of the restaurant.

We are even booking weddings on the water!  What a stunning location to tie the knot and have a party.  If you’re interesting in options to host a wedding, retirement party, birthday, staff event, holiday gathering or more please contact Megan@millstonepublichouse.com

We would love to give you the opportunity to enjoy a great night out on the waterfront and are currently running an online contest where you could WIN a $100 food and beverage tab at the Millstone King’s Wharf.

The Millstone Public House Victoria Day hours

As we enjoy this beautiful holiday Monday we may wish to raise a glass to the woman responsible for this National long weekend. Her name is Queen Victoria…and until 2015 when Queen Elizabeth stole the title she was the longest reigning monarch in England. With a total of 63 years on the throne this must be viewed as a rather large accomplishment in a time when many people did not live past 40. The period of her reign was known appropriately as the Victorian Era which is hallmarked by strict standards of personal morality and dress.

Victoria was born on May 24th, 1819 and was the fifth in line to the throne. When all four of her brothers died without heirs she ascended to the throne following a rather sad and lonely childhood. She was an 18 year old Queen, married to her first cousin when someone tried to kill her during her first pregnancy! She went on to have eight children and many more assassination attempts all while ruling an empire until her death in 1901 at the age of 81.

Her legacy includes the gradual establishment of a modern constitutional monarchy and reforms to the voting system which increased the power of the House of Commons and reduced the rule of the house of Lords. This forever changed the role of the British Monarchy and informs the way in which the current Queen interacts with the Prime Minister. In 1867, Walter Bagehot wrote that the monarch only retained “the right to be consulted, the right to encourage, and the right to warn.”

What a lady. What a life.

Both Millstone locations will be CLOSED on Monday May 21st.

Superbowl and our second Birthday!

On Sunday February 4th our little pub will turn 2 years old.  (Yes, we opened on February 7th, 2016 but it was on Superbowl Sunday so we’re rolling with that because it’s fun)  What an incredible first few years we have had.  Through a lot of learning curves, a few missteps and many wonderful days and nights we’ve grown into the community pub we dreamed of being.  We can not thank you enough for welcoming us into your lives and giving us the opportunity to employ 40 local service industry rock stars..it is a dream come true!  We invite you to come raise a glass with us in celebration of this 2 year milestone at the Millstone Public House.

We’d also like to invite you to come cheer on the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots as they battle for victory at the Superbowl.  So many have said the Eagles will take it this year…but then again the Patriots have their golden boy Mr. Bunchen 😉 .  The game will be played at both locations so pick your favourite Millstone and your favourite team and get in on the action.

If you want to know some things about the teams..click here.

Hand pressed and impressed

You can travel the world for culinary delights but the truth is the North American contribution to gastronomy centers predominantly around the humble hamburger.  We eat them in the backyard and in our cars, we eat them for lunch and dinner and we never grow tired of the hand held delight.  At the Millstone Public House we have taken this diet staple and kicked it up into position with the finest of foods.

“The Millstone” starts with fresh ground  certified black angus beef, expertly seasoned, rolled into a ball then hand pressed onto a hot griddle to sear in the flavours.  The top side of the buttery bun is then prepared with fresh arugula and sliced plump tomato.  The bottom receives the hot hamburger patty and is topped with sautéed mushrooms and onions, smoked bacon, creamy melty brie cheese and a delicious sauce that oozes over the sides.  This masterpiece is then complimented by our never-frozen hand-cut french fries and a bowl of our oh-so-garlicy caesar salad.  The result is a meal you’ll come back for again and again.

Have you tried it yet?  We hope you’ll come in soon.  To view our full menu please go to www.millstonepublichouse.com

We now have two locations to serve you better!

Lupercalia

It’s coming up soon.  Our February tradition that sends us all running to buy cards, flowers and candy and professing our love for our lovers.  It’s fun and sweet and best enjoyed with a great meal.  But what is the history behind Valentine’s day?  As with most long standing rituals there is a bizarre story that was the seed of this day.  It was once called Lupercalia and though there are certainly links to love and marriage the resemblance to our modern day version ends there.

“In ancient Roman times members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility. They would then take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, According to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.  History.com

At the Millstone we will do something a little more down to earth and a lot more civilized.  There will be great wine, beautiful ambiance and another out of this world set menu to enjoy.  We hope you’ll join us and raise a glass to Love!

Potty mouth…spotless brewery

When we first began the search for the brews that would pour from our taps at the Millstone Public House we quickly found one brewery that did things a little differently.  In a world of political correctness and clean public images, the guys at Unfiltered Brewing have taken a different, and somewhat unconventional, path.  An introductory googling of Unfiltered gets you to their website which sets the tone for the audience; letting folks know where they stand when it comes to what is important.  When I asked brewmaster Greg Nash about the colourful language he was unapologetic and with a confident, sincere smile he simply said “This is how I do things.  It’s not rude, it’s direct”  He went on to explain that when the idea to launch a brewery began to percolate he knew one thing for certain – that it wouldn’t be about flash or marketing or gloss or even mass appeal –  “It was going to be about the f*#king beer!!”

img_3395

Graduating from the American Brewers Guild in California in 1996 Nash apprenticed in three different breweries in Sacramento before heading home to Canada.  He made a name for himself around the maritimes working at the Pumphouse Brewery in Moncton and various breweries in the Halifax area before deciding it was time to brew for himself.  As any entrepreneur will tell you the trade off in security is the flexibility and autonomy to do things your own way.  For Nash, this was a chance to make “really good f*&cking beer that people who know beer will appreciate”.  It’s not bubbly and light and fruity; it’s full, rich, earthy and well crafted.  It’s made with four simple ingredients.  For Nash beer is a food.  “It’s got to be done right and taste great!  And it has to be fresh..freshness is key”.

While the language Nash uses, and the ironically named Charm School Pub next door, are decidedly potty mouthed the brewery itself is absolutely spotless.  There is an obvious pride of operations there and a deep and abiding love of the craft.  It’s a nod to the history of the great drink and a local business thriving right here in Nova Scotia.  What’s not to love about that?

We are always serving up cold pints of Unfiltered Brew at the Millstone Public House.  But if you want to grab a Growler or enjoy one at Charm School they are located at  6041 North Street in Halifax.
