Here we go again..

Well…here we are again.

When we laid off 80% of our staff back in March it broke our heart.  At that time we didn’t know if or when we would hire them back or even if the business would survive what was coming.  The few remaining staff we kept on pivoted then pivoted again; teaching themselves how to answer two phones at once while packing orders, bagging groceries and comforting each other through the most uncertain and frightening time of their lives. Our cooks prepped in a quiet kitchen all day then got hammered by a flood of orders between 6 and 7pm each night all while worrying they would possibly lose their job if the orders stopped coming in.

The orders did keep coming in.  The community showed us a level of kindness and support that we could only describe as incredible.  It kept us all going.  Every kind comment in person or online was gas in the tank to keep going.  You bought Gift Cards in droves for a restaurant you couldn’t be certain would ever open again and it meant the world to us.

When we were able to open again you showed up.  Our masked staff smiled with their eyes and you dutifully sanitized your hands and kept your distance from the other customers.  When we installed walls between tables you commented that you loved them and  said they were cozy.  After hours of building, painting and decorating them in our garage it was great to hear that. You raised your voice to be heard through Plexiglas and ordered another drink and we loved you for it.  With every change we made you were there for us and slowly, between July and November we hired back all our staff plus a few new faces.  We booked Christmas parties and planned a customer appreciation night for the evening when we could finally kiss 2020 goodbye.  Then we were shut down again.

To lay off staff en masse once in a lifetime is agony.  To do it twice in a year, the second time right before Christmas, is unthinkable.  One by one we called them to send them to the Service Canada lines and they told us they understood and wished us well and said “keep the Millstone going so we have a place to come back to”.  We promised them we would.  We did it before and we will do it again.

The Millstone Public House is a locally owned small business but it is also a family.  We care about each other.  One of our managers volunteered to take a lay off so one of her staff could keep working.  It didn’t surprise us that she did that because that is what our team does for each other. It did break our heart to let her go though.  The gut punch of this year is palpable.

So, to our customers we say thank you!  Every order, every call, every compliment, every kind word and social media share is invaluable to us.  Over this holiday season as you hear the rally cries of Shop Local just know that every small business truly needs you.  You are the only way through this.

We have an exciting announcement!

We have been keeping a secret for a few weeks and are very excited to be able to share it with you now that the ink is dry.  The Millstone Public House is opening a beautiful new pub and restaurant on the King’s Wharf in Downtown Dartmouth.  It will be flooded with natural light, have stunning ocean views and a welcoming come-as-you-are vibe.  Construction is already underway to build out some walls and create some cozy Covid friendly booths and private dining spaces.  Our signature 300 year old Douglas Fir Bartop will soon be shined up, hoisted into place and ready to welcome the many cool pints and glasses of wine we will share together over the coming years.

This pub and restaurant will be our largest and give us the opportunity to hire between 30 -35 staff which feels incredible.  It is our goal to welcome the community in to the Millstone and have our place become an extension of your living room.  A public place to feel relaxed and at home.  You are a stranger here but once.

We are hoping to open in early January so stay tuned!

We are also happy to be offering another truckload sale at the Dartmouth and Bedford Millstone Public House.  From now until November 24th you can stock up on restaurant quality steaks, chicken breast, seafood, appetizers and more.  We even have bake-at-home apple pies available to warm up a winter night at the last minute.  Have you tried the Ribs yet?  They go from frozen to thawed in water to broiled and on the table in less than 30 minutes and are fall off the bone tender and delicious.

To shop the truckload sale go to www.millstonepublichousetruckload.com
Pick up will take place in Dartmouth and Bedford on Wednesday November 25th.

What would they say??

Every year our staff arrive to work on Halloween with costumes that make us smile.  We love their positive attitude and welcoming spirit…and also their incredible creativity.

Last year, the gang at the Dartmouth Millstone won top prize &  bragging rights for best group costume with their awesome rendition of “The Dudes” that adorn our walls.  That stunning photo, which is a major focal point of our pub,  was taken in 1895 at the Provincial Normal School (PNS) in Truro.  Those young men were studying to become teachers in a time and place that was dramatically different from our modern world.  What I love about this photo is how stunning the contrast between the lives of those two groups of people spaced 124 years apart.

The dudes from 1895 are about the same age as the women in the photo from 2019.  They had youth and opportunity and their whole future in front of them…just as we do now.  In 1895 the PNS wouldn’t have allowed women to attend; in modern times these women can do anything they set their minds to.  In 1895 those dudes wouldn’t have had indoor plumbing and faced two world wars and the Halifax explosion, but these women now have access to education, health care, pluming, central heat, wifi and vaccines that would have blown the minds of every Nova Scotian back in the day.

As we walk through the final few months of this difficult year may we take a moment to be grateful for all that we have and how far we have come.  If those dudes could see the world now, what would they say?  Would they ask us to be gentle on ourselves and savour all the good that comes from being alive?  Would they nudge us towards having fun and laughing and loving?  Is it possible they would ask us to raise a glass to life?

From all of us at the Millstone Public House we wish you a safe and happy Halloween.  Come as you are…and stay a while.  You are a stranger here but once.

Bubble Booths!

We at the Millstone Public House have installed what we like to call Bubble Booths in both of our restaurants!  These cozy little walls allow us to seat nearly every table in the pub and expand how many of you we can accommodate on busy lunch hours and evenings.  Combined with our hand sanitizer at the door, our single use and touchless menus, our face covered staff and our vigilant cleaning, we are confident that you will enjoy your time relaxing with us.

Though we look forward to the day when we can toss these new walls in a fire pit and remove our masks forever, we know they are here for now and are doing our best to provide you with a safe and comfortable dining experience.

Things really are looking up!  Thanks to your support we have hired a few new staff and are working on a new menu which we hope to launch later this year.

Our online ordering is proving to be a real hit with our customers.  We have received great feedback stating how easy it is to use which is fantastic to know.  Check it out at www.millstonepublichouse.com  Order up some delicious burgers like the Millstone, The Backyard or the Candied Bacon, or some fabulous pasta dishes like the Maple Curry Penne and the Seafood Linguine.  Add a few bottles of wine and a dessert or two and make a night of it.  Orders are ready within 30 minutes and packed up for you to pick up.  Give it  a try!

How about Brunch at the Millstone?

As we tip our toes into the new world this fall we are beginning to gather together again.  Masks on, palms sanitized, we nod instead of shaking hands, limit hugs and keep a distance; but we need to be together.  Even animals in the wild come together at the water hole.  Our collective will to limit the spread of Covid 19 is strong, and we as a province have proven that we care enough about each other to do what is needed to keep our people safe.   But, done safely, we can still be together.

At the Millstone Public House we continue to offer sanitizing spray at the door, single use menus, physically distanced tables and more.  Our staff have always worn masks and are now greeting customers at the door who also wear face coverings that can’t entirely hide their smiles. Sure it’s weird, but it’s also a daily demonstration of togetherness.  Care for the common good.  It’s not forever, but it is for now…

We would like to invite you to join us for Brunch at the Millstone Public House.  After a busy week it can be a real treat to let someone else make the eggs and fry up the bacon.  Having someone else top up your coffee or bring you another Mimosa is also not a bad way to enjoy a few leisurely hours on a Saturday or Sunday.  Call a friend or family member and pop down to the Millstone for Brunch this weekend.  We’d love to serve you.

Our full menu is available on our website HERE.

*During brunch service, which runs Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 – 2:00pm, we also offer our fabulous burgers, pasta dishes, appetizers and more.

Check out our new online ordering system.  We think it’s pretty slick.  www.millstonepublichouse.com

The Truckload Sale is Back – now at both locations!

We have heard from so many customers that the products they buy through our truckload sale are some of the best they have ever had.  A real standout has been the chicken breast which you have described as very juicy and flavourful.  The steaks are also incredibly tender and folks seem to love how they are individually vacuum sealed making thawing quick and easy.  The Pork Chops and Scallops are going fast this time around and have limited quantities so jump on those before they sell out.

We are selling 4kg of top quality frozen chicken breast for $55.00 which works out to $6.25 per pound!  These are individually commercially frozen top quality chicken breasts.  Open the bag, grab a few, throw them on the bbq and dinner is served.  Have you ever tried to BBQ frozen Chicken?  You’ll get great grill marks on the outside and have juicy (not over-cooked) tender chicken inside.  Just be sure to bring it to the correct temperature all the way through.

So go ahead and take advantage of huge savings on high end restaurant quality meats.  Order a lot to share with friends and family, or fill up your freezer and save a few trips to the store.  These prices are worth looking into and the quality is excellent!

Here’s how it works:

1. CLICK –   www.millstonepublichousetruckload.com

2. PICK and PAY : Select the location closest to you, browse the shop, choose from our restaurant-quality meats and seafood and pay though the website.

3.  SHARE the link with your friends!  They will thank you for it.

4. PICK UP: Come to the Millstone Public House in Dartmouth on August 19th between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm  or The Millstone Public House in Bedford between 1:30pm 4:30pm and have your order delivered to your trunk. (You will receive an email confirmation of your order with pick up details.)

It’s that easy.  The only thing to note is that the cut off for ordering is  Monday August 18th at 1:00pm.

Thank you for your support!

The Millstone Team.
