Upscale Food, Down to Earth Pub.

Check out this month’s Masthead News for this article about the Millstone Public House!  We are thrilled to be part of your community.

The Millstone Public House has found a place in the competitive restaurant industry by focussing on what customers are searching for.  In designing their pub, local owners Adam and Joanne McCullough have created a space with a welcoming and engaging atmosphere, friendly and efficient service and well prepared meals made with fresh ingredients.  The result has won them many fans in the community and allowed them to do what they love doing best.

Modelled after their successful Dartmouth location, the Bedford Millstone Public House is a cozy nook with great lighting and a retro sports theme.  The walls display interesting historic photos of athletes while vintage sports equipment hangs on hooks as if left there by players who have long given up the game.  A well worn wooden toboggan and an old pedal bike hang quaintly above diners adding just the right amount of charm to their modern dining room.   This theme is meant to inspire a feeling of nostalgia, they say, and remind us to focus on the fun that is to be had in life.

The menu offers “elevated pub food” meaning they do things like top their seasoned, hand pressed hamburgers with chef created flavour combinations like arugula, brie and sautéed mushrooms. The Candied Bacon Burger is a must try.  The culinary style, developed by renowned Chef James MacDougall, provides customers with a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich that literally bursts out of the bread and exceptional fish tacos made with fresh slices of avocado and house made pico de gallo.  Other finds include a Creamy Maple Curry Chicken Penne and a Classic Seafood Linguine, both of which would be at home in fine dining establishments.  On the lighter side you’ll find a classic Italian Caprese Salad and a fresh Spinach and Goat Cheese Salad tossed with house made grapefruit vinaigrette dressing. With great kids’ meals, gluten free and vegetarian options, an excellent weekend brunch and  full bar, there is something for everyone to enjoy.  If you’re looking for a mid week treat, come for Wing Wednesday when chicken wings are half price after 5:00pm. If you’re into beer, five of their ten draft taps are dedicated to local craft breweries.  Happy Hour runs Sunday to Thursday 3:00 to 6:00pm.

Located in the beautiful new Sante Centre on Gary Martin Drive, the pub is conveniently found across the street from the BMO Centre in West Bedford.  The entrance, as well as ample free parking, is tucked away at the back.  Those who know where The Millstone Public House is say it is worth the search.   Their motto “Come as you are” is emblazoned above the front door.  Once you see that you’ll know you’ve arrived.

The full menu can be found on their website at www.millstonepublichouse.com.  While reservations are not necessary you can book a table by calling 902-431-8053 – Masthead News, April 2019

Maybe just what you’re craving…

At this point in the new year you may be searching for ways to add a little more greens and fresh veggies into your life.  After a month of chocolates and cookies your body could be craving the elegant crunch of a crisp salad and we’ve got just what you’re looking for.  Chef Jamie has put two NEW salads on our menu and they have really raised the game.

First we have the Caprese Salad.  It is a true Italian classic with simple yet exceptional taste.  Thick sliced tomato, thick cut buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil, house made balsamic reduction, sea salt and cracked black pepper.  It packs a punch of freshness, texture and flavour!  Try it once and you’ll be packing your bags for Naples.

Next we have a NEW Spinach Salad that is sure to please.  Fresh Baby Spinach with dried cranberries, pistachio nuts, hard boiled egg, crumbled goat cheese and red onion tossed in a delicious house made grapefruit vinaigrette dressing.  *Add seared scallops or shrimp to kick it up a notch and you’ll be glad you did!

The Millstone Public House Victoria Day hours

As we enjoy this beautiful holiday Monday we may wish to raise a glass to the woman responsible for this National long weekend. Her name is Queen Victoria…and until 2015 when Queen Elizabeth stole the title she was the longest reigning monarch in England. With a total of 63 years on the throne this must be viewed as a rather large accomplishment in a time when many people did not live past 40. The period of her reign was known appropriately as the Victorian Era which is hallmarked by strict standards of personal morality and dress.

Victoria was born on May 24th, 1819 and was the fifth in line to the throne. When all four of her brothers died without heirs she ascended to the throne following a rather sad and lonely childhood. She was an 18 year old Queen, married to her first cousin when someone tried to kill her during her first pregnancy! She went on to have eight children and many more assassination attempts all while ruling an empire until her death in 1901 at the age of 81.

Her legacy includes the gradual establishment of a modern constitutional monarchy and reforms to the voting system which increased the power of the House of Commons and reduced the rule of the house of Lords. This forever changed the role of the British Monarchy and informs the way in which the current Queen interacts with the Prime Minister. In 1867, Walter Bagehot wrote that the monarch only retained “the right to be consulted, the right to encourage, and the right to warn.”

What a lady. What a life.

Both Millstone locations will be CLOSED on Monday May 21st.

Remember, life opens up when you do. So pull up a barstool and have some fun.

Happy Mother’s Day

Mother’s just know and they fiercely act on their innate knowledge to put the well being of their children first. Their love is at times so subtle you miss it. Like the soccer mom sitting on the sidelines of a rainy game with a warm, dry towel tucked into her oversized handbag waiting to be wrapped around her favourite player but not herself. Like the concerned mom losing a night of sleep listening for a cough in the night from a child with a cold. It is the most enduring love most of us will ever feel and today we take a moment to celebrate our moms.

The Millstone Public House invites you to come join us on this beautiful sunny day. We will break bread and raise our glasses to our moms.

Sincerely,
The Millstone Public House management and staff.

Closed for Heritage Day – Monday February 19th.

Some call it Family Day, but in the beautiful east coast province of Nova Scotia we call it Heritage Day.  It’s the only statutory holiday in February and aims to give us all a chance to take a much needed break in the thick of winter.  Adding a bit of history to the mix allows us to reflect on what it means to be Canadian and celebrate the extraordinary achievements and contributions of those who have walked these shores before us.

This year we are honouring a beautiful and brave woman named Mona Parsons.  She was born in Middelton, NS on February 17th, 1901.  An Acadia University Drama Graduate and aspiring actress, she tried to make it big in the big apple only to abandon that dream to come home to care for her ailing mother. Those acting skills were much later put to good use as a member of the resistance against the Nazis in war torn Europe….intrigued, you should be.

Hers is a story of bravery and honour and a commitment to her native land.  To read more about this incredible Canadian please click here.

To give our wonderful staff a much earned day off we will be CLOSED for Heritage Day on Monday February 19th, 2018.
